DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: \n\nThursday\, January 24 \, 2019 | 7 pm \n\nIt is with great pleasure that we welcome Jean-Paul Kelly to Plug In ICA for his solo-exhibition That ends that matter\, a comprehensive video installation set in a courtroom. Part re-enactment combined with found-photo montage streams\, and graphical animation\, That ends that matter attempts to parse through and recite Kelly’s experiences observing hearings at the City of London Magistrates’ Court in Central London\, UK. Given the UK’s regulations restricting all forms of visual or audio recording in courtrooms\, any recollection of events throughout a hearing becomes subjective. In an effort to recount what the artist\, referencing documentarian Fredrick Wiseman\, calls a “fair account” of what he witnessed\, there’s an embrace of abstraction\, tangents\, error\, and the aestheticization of Kelly’s felt experiences. \nPlease join us tonight at 7:00 PM for the public reception of Jean-Paul Kelly’s – That ends that matter – the first presentation of his work in Winnipeg and in the prairies. \n\nHe has extensively exhibited and screened works across North America and Europe including Delfina Foundation (London)\, Musée d’art contemporain des Laurentides (Saint-Jérôme)\, CGP London: Dilston Grove\, Oakville Galleries\, Wexner Center for the Arts (Columbus)\, The Power Plant (Toronto)\, Mercer Union (Toronto)\, and Gallery TPW (Toronto). Screenings include: Canada House (London)\, Courtisane Festival (Ghent)\, Vdrome\, International Film Festival Rotterdam\, New York Film Festival\, and Toronto International Film Festival. He has held artist residencies at the ISCP (New York) and Delfina Foundation; and was a guest artist at the 2018 Brakhage Center Symposium and the 2013 Flaherty Seminar. Kelly received the 2015 Images Festival Award\, the 2014 Kazuko Trust Award from the Film Society of Lincoln Center. \n\n\n\n
