SUMMARY:That ends that matter | Curatorial Tour by Jenifer Papararo
DESCRIPTION:A FREE guided tour by Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art’s Executive Director\, Jenifer Papararo\, will take you through Jean-Paul Kelly’s solo-exhibition\, That ends that matter\, Saturday\, March 09\, 2019\, at 3pm. \n\nINFORMATION ABOUT “THAT ENDS THAT MATTER”: \nIt is with great pleasure that we welcome Jean-Paul Kelly to Plug In ICA for his solo-exhibition\, That ends that matter\, a comprehensive video installation set in a courtroom. Part re-enactment combined with found-photo montage streams and graphical animation\, That ends that matter attempts to parse through and recite Kelly’s experiences observing hearings at the City of London Magistrates’ Court in Central London\, UK. Given the UK’s regulations restricting all forms of visual or audio recording in courtrooms\, any recollection of events throughout a hearing becomes subjective. In an effort to recount what the artist\, referencing documentarian Fredrick Wiseman\, calls a “fair account” of what he witnessed\, there’s an embrace of abstraction\, tangents\, error\, and the aestheticization of Kelly’s felt experiences. \n\nRelated exhibit:  Jean-Paul Kelly: That ends that matter

SUMMARY:Respondent Series Screening | Bonjour aux amis de calamité curated by Jean-Paul Kelly
DESCRIPTION:As part of our Respondent Series and in conjunction with Jean-Paul Kelly’s current exhibition\, “That ends that matter\,” Plug In ICA presents Bonjour aux amis de calamité\, [B.A.A.D.C] a screening of film and videos curated by Kelly. The screening offers insight into Kelly’s working method and continued conflation of the decisions made by journalists with those made under the aesthetic conventions of the visual artist\, aligning the objective principles of documentary with the subjective process of selection by artists. Kelly will join us in a video chat to introduce the screening and his curatorial thinking. \n*The exhibition That ends that matter continues the artist’s interest in the divide between materiality and perception; what we see and what is actually represented. SUMMARY:That ends that matter | Visite guidée en français avec Evin Collis
DESCRIPTION:Rejoignez-nous le samedi 16 février à 15 h\, où Evin Collis donnera un tour guidé GRATUIT en français de l’exposition “That ends that matter” par Jean-Paul Kelly.

SUMMARY:Jean-Paul Kelly: That ends that matter
DESCRIPTION:Jean-Paul Kelly:That ends that matter |\nExhibition Dates: January 25 – March 24\, 2019\n\nIt is with great pleasure that we welcome Jean-Paul Kelly to Plug In ICA for his solo-exhibition That ends that matter\, a comprehensive video installation set in a courtroom. Part re-enactment combined with found-photo montage streams\, and graphical animation\, That ends that matter attempts to parse through and recite Kelly’s experiences observing hearings at the City of London Magistrates’ Court in Central London\, UK. \nBased in Toronto\, Kelly has over the last decade and half\, been closely working within a practice rooted in dissecting documentary frameworks. In an earlier interview for Vdrome.org\, Kelly references the writer Truman Capote’s work as “poetic reporting” a process that Kelly embraces. Kelly states\, “I’m interested in the metaphors and possibilities of documentary substance.” \nThis is the first presentation of Jean-Paul Kelly’s work in Winnipeg and in the prairies. He has extensively exhibited and screened works across North America and Europe including The Power Plant\, Toronto; Mercer Union Centre for Contemporary Art\, Toronto; Gallery TPW\, Toronto; Scrap Metal Gallery\, Toronto; SBC Gallery\, Montreal; Wexner Center for the Arts\, Columbus; Vox Populi\, Philadelphia; Nightingale Cinema\, Chicago; Courtesan Festival\, Ghent; International Film Festival\, Rotterdam; The New York Film Festival; The Toronto International Film Festival and Delfina Foundation\, London UK. In 2014\, he was the recipient of the Kazuko Trust Award from the Film Society of Lincoln Center\, New York. He’s been longlisted the Sobey Art Award and the AIMIA|AGO Photography Prize. \n\nPlug In Institute of Contemporary Art recognizes we are on Treaty One Territory\, the traditional territories of the Anishinaabe\, Métis\, Cree\, Dakota\, Dene\, and Oji-Cree Nations. \nAll public programming is free and open to the public. Everyone welcome! This exhibition contains explicit sexual and violent content material\, and might not be suitable for all ages. Please use discretion.

SUMMARY:Days of Reading | Curatorial Tour by Sarah Nesbitt
DESCRIPTION:This Saturday\, (Dec. 15) JOIN US at 3PM\, as co-curator\, Sarah Nesbitt conducts a FREE guided tour of our current exhibition\, “Days of Reading: beyond this state of affairs”. Anyone and everyone’s invited to participate! Cost: FREE (like all of our programming). \n*This is our last public program in relation to Days of Reading: beyond this state of affairs so please take this opportunity to visit the exhibition and learn about the processes and ideas behind this exhibition. \nDid you know that Plug In ICA offers FREE guided tours and educational programs? We invite student groups to participate in our learning programs that include in-depth curriculum guides customized for each exhibition. \nFor more information on this and our other education programs\, contact Luther Konadu at luther@plugin.org. For general information please contact: info@plugin.org or call 1.204.942.1043 \n————————————————————— \nINFORMATION ABOUT DAYS OF READING: BEYOND THIS STATE OF AFFAIRS \nPlug In Institute of Contemporary Art presents\, Days of Reading: beyond this state of affairs. Structured around general notions of indexing\, collecting\, cloaking and the reveal with a focus on material and an overlay of poetry – the exhibition is grounded in the use of text\, often found\, poetic\, and colloquial\, with historical and political narratives interwoven as material\, including the popular Black cultural magazine Jet in Theaster Gates’s work Do I Know You \, 2017; the Haitian Declaration of Independence in Liberté ou la morte by Fabiola Carranza; strip mall signage in Ken Lum’s 117 Dwight Eisenhower Blvd\, 2009; and in recently uncovered medieval graffiti in All Saints Bench \, 2018 by Shannon Bool.\n.\nNatalie Czech\, Hassan Khan\, and Sylvia Matas present language using banal everyday signifiers: magazine print ads\, LED signage\, or newspaper clippings\, which they parse into poetic and political gestures. Jeanne Randolph\, and Sameer Farooq and Jared Stanley activate collections through ficto-criticism (Randolph) and speculative museums (Farooq and Stanley)\, and Leah Decter\, like Carranza\, excavates language from the\narchive of her maternal grandfather’s ship’s manifest coming in to Canada in her woven work\, (through)line(age) 1779-1925-2013\, 2013.\n.\nAs part of the exhibition Raven Chacon begins a new book project in dedication to the life of\, an early 20th century Yankton Dakota woman that will be comprised of twelve musical scores dedicated to twelve contemporary Indigenous women “working in the field of contemporary music performance or composition.”\n.\nThe exhibition is to be read as one moves through it. Through a paring of objects and texts\, how histories are captured and presented surface in prosaic terms\, but carry the weight of history’s missteps and misrepresentations.\n—————————————————————\nAcknowledgments:\nPlug In ICA extends our heartfelt gratitude to our generous donors\, valued members\, and dedicated volunteers. We acknowledge the sustaining support of our Director’s Circle. You all make a difference. \nWe gratefully acknowledge the support of the Canada Council\, the Manitoba Arts Council and Winnipeg Arts Council. SUMMARY:Stages Speaker Series: Artist Talk by Raymond Boisjoly
DESCRIPTION:***Off-site location: 92 Higgins Ave. Winnipeg\, MB\, Canada. (wheelchair accessible; loads of parking; #47 bus route)*** \nOn Friday\, December 14th 2018\, Plug In ICA will present an artist talk with Raymond Boisjoly as part of our STAGES Speaker Series in anticipation of STAGES 2019.* \nBoisjoly is in Winnipeg to begin his research for STAGES 2019 and present on his artwork and process\, which tussles with the possibility of communicating a sense of indigeneity that is not necessarily crucial to identity. As such he extends his research and actions beyond his personal or ancestral history from a position that is fractured between the desire for representation and the instability of image-making. Boisjoly obscures meaning and a direct form of address. His works are to be deciphered\, with meaning often intentionally scrambled\, hidden and coded. Through fragmentation and distortion\, he conceals his research and reasoning\, most commonly using photography and printing as processes to redirect our assumed understandings surrounding Indigenous communities as a means to speak about identity itself. \n*With its conception in 2017\, STAGES sets out to activate the city of Winnipeg with temporary public sculpture and performances by international and local artists. The Speaker Series is a means of initiating and connecting the artists with local audiences\, and introducing visiting artists to Winnipeg. \nRaymond Boisjoly has a BFA from Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design where he currently teaches. He also has an MFA from UBC and has exhibited work widely across Canada and abroad. Boisjoly has shown work at Platform Centre for Photographic + Digital Arts\, Winnipeg; The Power Plant\, Toronto; Vancouver Art Gallery; Camera Austria\, Vienna; Triangle France\, Marseille; and most recently at SITElines\, Santa Fe. In 2017\, he was a finalist for the AIMIA|AGO Photography Prize as well as the Sobey Art Award. Writings on Boisjoly’s work have appeared in Mousse Magazine\, C Magazine\, and OSMOS Magazine to name a few. He is represented by Catriona Jefferies\, Vancouver. \nAcknowledgements: \nPlug In Institute of Contemporary Art recognizes we are on Treaty One Territory\, the traditional territories of the Anishinaabe\, Métis\, Cree\, Dakota\, Dene\, and Oji-Cree Nations. \nStages Speaker Series & STAGES 2019 is supported by the Winnipeg Foundation. \n We thank our community partners Alt Hotel for their continued support of STAGES. And would like to thank Leon A Brown for providing us with this off-site location. \nPlug In ICA extends our heartfelt gratitude to our generous donors\, valued members\, and dedicated volunteers. SUMMARY:Interpreting [Interrupting] Youth: Video Screening and Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Interpreting [Interrupting] Youth \n• Screening and Discussion • Free! \nWednesday\, November 21st | 5:00 – 7:00 pm \nScreening & Discussion: 5:30 pm\n______________________________________________________ \nOn Wednesday\, November 21\, 2018\, discover our current exhibition\, Days of Reading: beyond this state of affairs through the interpretive lens of 5 youth participants. \nStarting at 5:00 pm\, participants of the sixth edition of our Interpreting [Interrupting] Youth [IIY] program\, Mark Ginther\, Tuva Bergstrom\, Dylan VanDamme\, Jordan Santiago and Victor Ilunga will offer the presentation of a short interpretive video produced by them in collaboration with Plug In ICA. \nThe Interpreting Youth program is\, yet\, another way Plug In ICA provides an entry into conversations and practices happening in contemporary art today. It is integral to the ICA’s educational programming to audiences in the community. \nThe screening offers a visual reflection of the youth’s collective and individual experience of Days of Reading: beyond this state of affairs\, and marks the culmination of an intensive four week session\, working and thinking together about the exhibition\, and about video as an interpretive mode. For this iteration of the program\, participants had the opportunity to work closely with our Assistant Curator\, Luther Konadu\, to discuss process\, approach and multi-media content creation. \nThe youth screening and panel discussion will begin at 5:30 pm\, followed by a short reception. Assistant Curator\, Luther Konadu\, will moderate the panel discussion with IIY participants. Everyone is welcome! Snacks and refreshments will be served.\n______________________________________________________ \nInterpreting [Interrupting] Youth is designed for youth ages 16 to 24. The program reverses a pre-existing interpretive model used within arts institutions that often produce short videos as educational devices. The “Interpreting [Interrupting] Youth” program inversely begins with the youth’s experience of the artwork\, challenging conventional models of art interpretation by overturning basic roles of authority and authorship.

SUMMARY:Days of Reading: beyond this state of affairs | Spanish Tour
\n\nPlug In Institute of Contemporary Art is eager to announce the opening of our fall exhibition\, Days of Reading: beyond this state of affairs . Through a paring of objects and texts\, how histories are captured and presented surface in prosaic terms\, but carry the weight of history’s missteps and misrepresentations. Please join us Saturday\, September 29th for our opening reception programmed alongside an exciting schedule of events including a discussion between Raven Chacon\, Suzanne Kite\, and Laura Ortman at 6pm\, followed by performances by Kite and Ortman at 8pm.\n.\nImage credit: Ken Lum\, 117 Dwight Eisenhower Blvd\, 2009\, Plexiglas\, enamel paint\, powder-coated aluminum\, 97 x 82 x 2 inches\, Courtesy the artist & Royale Projects\, Los Angeles

SUMMARY:Stages Speaker Series | Artist Talk by Joar Nango
DESCRIPTION:Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art presents:\nSTAGES Speaker Series: Artist talk by Joar Nango\n\nTuesday\, November 13th\, 2018 | 7 PM \nOff-site location: 227 McDermot Ave\, Winnipeg\, MB \n\n\n\nOn Tuesday\, November 13th 2018\, Plug In ICA will kick off its second iteration of the STAGES Speaker Series in anticipation of STAGES 2019. With its conception in 2017\, STAGES set out to activate the City of Winnipeg with temporary public sculpture and performances by nine international and local artists. The speaker series became a means of initiating and connecting the artists with local audiences\, and introducing visiting artists to Winnipeg. \n\n\nOur first speaker in the 2019 STAGES Speakers Series is architect\, builder\, artist\, and self-publisher Joar Nango. Nango’s work often parses out the division between design\, architecture\, and visual art and uses improvisation as method and process. Belonging to the indigenous peoples from Sápmi\, the traditional territories of Sámi\, improvisation is a cultural disposition for several communities like his\, where the climate is merciless and resources are scarce. As such\, Nango’s sculptural practice is stirred by chance\, experimentation with localized raw materials\, DIY aesthetics\, and an in-tuned relationship to place. He creates actions and interventions; makeshift as well as permanent ones\, that ultimately add up to our knowledge and connectedness to the environment we stand and thrive on. \nA long proponent of printed matter and its political potential to mobilize larger social transformations\, Nango along with collaborators have fulfilled publication projects including The Indigenuity Project\, The Normadic Library and the self-published zine series Sámi Huksendáidda: the Fanzine. Nango has been part of a number of exhibition projects throughout Canada and elsewhere. Among which includes\, the Ottawa Art Gallery\, Vancouver’s Western Front\, Gallery Deluxe in Halifax\, and The National Museum of Art\, Architecture and Design in Oslo\, Norway and Sydhavn Station in Copenhagen\, Denmark. He recently presented European Everything at Documenta 14 in Athens and Kassel in 2017. \n\nUPCOMING [SAVE THE DATE] • Raymond Boisjoly will be our second speaker in the 2018/19 Stages Speaker Series on Saturday\, December 15\, 2018 **OFF-SITE location: 92 Higgins Ave. Winnipeg\, MB\, Canada. SUMMARY:Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art co-presents with the School of Art\, University of Manitoba and hosted by the Winnipeg Art Gallery | Artist Talk by Ken Lum
DESCRIPTION:As part of our fall exhibition Days of Reading: beyond this state of affairs\, Plug In ICA is fortunate to welcome Ken Lum\, one of the exhibiting artists\, to Winnipeg. In collaboration with the Winnipeg Art Gallery and the School of Art\, University of Manitoba\, Lum will be presenting a talk covering the scope of his multi-decade oeuvre. \nA frequent writer\, artist\, and educator\, Lum recently described\, “it is through art that I am constantly challenged to understand the world and my place within it\, even if that place is one that I am not entirely at home in.” He declared this sentiment in an essay comparing his experiences as a resident of the United States to his life growing up in Canada where he began his career as an artist. In many respects\, this assertion fittingly doubles as an undergirding principle to every image\, object or monument he has imagined and put out into the world. If one’s self-examination becomes heightened with a shift in a sense of place and geography\, then it is with this same grasp of self in tandem with a social one that becomes the thriving pulse for Lum’s work as an artist\, educator\, and individual.  \nWith a long career like Lum’s\, it feels superfluous to reiterate his immeasurable achievements but needless to say\, Lum is one of Canada’s most essential artists living today. Though he is currently making home in Philadelphia as the chair of Fine Arts at University of Pennsylvania’s School of Art & Design\, his resonance continues to be intertwined within contemporary art dialogue being generated in Canada. Lum’s public works across major metropolitan cities in Canada remain iconic markers not only for a cities’ cultural identity but illuminate the nation’s historical memory. His work is taught as part of art history curriculums at universities across the country and he continues to be an indispensible artist among prominent cultural institutions throughout the world. Lum is currently the chief curatorial advisor for Monument Lab; a city-wide public art and architectural exhibition in Philadelphia. In Winnipeg his work is on exhibit at the Winnipeg Art Gallery as part of the 80s Image and at Plug In ICA as part of Days of Reading. He will be conducting a seminar at the School of Art\, University of Manitoba. \nRelated exhibit:  \n\nDays of Reading

Zitkála-Šá’s life is interpreted through music\, and\, in dialogue with collaborators Suzanne Kite and Laura Ortman\, in an abstract form that subordinates language and clarity\, never prescribing itself as one view that is presented as an authentic biography. \nThe public discuss will focus of Chacon’s research and the collaborative participation of Suzanne Kite and Laura Ortman. SUMMARY:Panel Discussion | Raven Chacon\, Laura Ortman and Suzanne Kite | September 29\, 6pm
DESCRIPTION:Panel Discussion and Performance | Raven Chacon\, Laura Ortman and Suzanne Kite\nPlug In Institute of Contemporary Art | 1\, 460 Portage Ave | Winnipeg MB | Canada\n\nAs part of Plug In ICA’s Respondent Series for the exhibition\, Days of Reading: beyond this state of affairs\, we present a conversation between\, artist and composer Raven Chacon\, and experimental musician’s Laura Ortman and Suzanne Kite. \nRaven Chacon’s participation in Days of Reading: beyond this state of affairs begins with a new book project and sound piece that will comprise twelve musical scores dedicated to twelve contemporary Indigenous women “working in the field of contemporary music performance or composition\,“ alongside essays and performance notes. \nThis work in progress is in dedication to the life of Zitkála-Šá\, an early 20th century Yankton Dakota woman who was a prolific writer\, musician\, and activist. Kite and Ortman will perform on Plug In ICA’s rooftop shortly following the conversation and as part of Days of Reading’s opening reception. \n\nRelated exhibit:\nDays of Reading: beyond this state of affairs

SUMMARY:Respondent Series | Artist Talk with Shannon Bool | September 25\, 7pm
DESCRIPTION:Respondent Series | Artist Talk with Shannon Bool\n\nBerlin-based artist\, Shannon Bool\, will be presenting a talk on Tuesday\, September 25th\, 2018 at 7pm. The talk is in conjunction with the exhibition\, Days of Reading: beyond this state of affairs\, which opens Saturday\, September 29th\, 2018. The Canadian born artist’s stream of work has always permutated in diverging forms to include murals\, sculpture\, tapestries\, and photograms. She continues to concentrate her works in visual codes that are entrenched in popular culture\, art history\, pre-historic and ancient civilizations. Bool’s talk will cover her expansive practice\, as well as her commissioned contribution for the upcoming fall exhibition: All Saints Bench. This new work is an extension from a previous line of work that is also involved with surface\, ornamentation and their historical\, emotional and poetic resonance. \nThis is the first presentation of Bool’s work in Winnipeg. We are privileged to host her work along with an esteemed list of artists gathered for Days of Reading: beyond this state of affairs. \nWe would also like to recognize Daniel Faria for his support of All Saints Bench and Fabris and Watts for their support in producing this new work by Bool. \n\nAssociated Programming: \nFriday\, September 28\, 7pm | Sameer Farooq\, Jeanne Randolph and Jared Stanley in conversation \nSaturday\, September 29 | Nuit Blanche\, Exhibition open 7pm to 1am \n\n7-11pm | Opening Reception\n6pm | Panel Discussion with Raven Chacon\, Laura Ortman and Suzanne Kite (in partnership with Video Pool Media Centre)\n8pm | Performances by Laura Ortman and Suzanne Kite\n\nThursday\, November 1\, 7pm | Artist Talk Ken Lum
Hosted by the Winnipeg Art Gallery in Eckhardt Hall\, 300 Memorial Boulevard\, Winnipeg\, and presented by the School of Art\, University of Manitoba & Plug In Institute of Contemporary \n\n\n\nRelated exhibit: \n\n\nDays of Reading: beyond this state of affairs
