Respondent Series: Screening of performance-based videos by Naufus Ramirez Figueroa

Thursday, April 26, 2018 • 7pm

On Thursday, April 26 at 7pm please join us for a double screening of Mimesis of Mimesis, 2016 and Linnæus in Tenebris, 2017 by Naufus Ramírez Figueroa. Presented in conjunction with Ramírez-Figueroa’s solo exhibition Shit-Baby and the Crumpled Giraffe, currently on view at Plug In ICA, the two videos will be screened as part of our ongoing Respondent Series. These works in particular offer insight into Ramírez-Figueroa’s dexterity as a performance artist and his investment in the formal language of theatre.

Both Mimesis of Mimesis and Linnæus in Tenebris are part of an ongoing commission by Corpus (EU) and If I Can’t Dance (Amsterdam) which propose an “attempt to exhaust [Ramírez-Figueroa’s] interest in the Guatemalan Civil War as a recurring subject of his work”.

Mimesis of Mimesis was a live performance that remains in circulation through edited documentation. It was performed and recorded on November 24, 2016 at the Royal Tropical Institute in Amsterdam. Linnæus in Tenebris is the title of both a site-specific installation and a performance situated in the Nave of CAPC Contemporary Art Museum Bordeaux (France). Each of the performances work with the colonial history of the site they are situated within while also making broader connections.

The evening will commence with an introduction by Executive Director and exhibition curator, Jenifer Papararo. The run time for both videos is approximately 25 minutes.

Naufus Ramírez Figueroa is a Guatemalan and Canadian artist. Working in sculpture, performance, video, installation and printmaking, Figueroa’s work is grounded in mechanisms and conditions of colonialism worldwide, with specific investment in Guatemalan history. Receiving ongoing support from Corpus (2015-present), Figueroa has engaged in a series of performances. The weight of his subjects is often tempered by a playful material sensibility, forays into childhood, dreams, fantasy and the complexity of embodiment. Figueroa holds a BFA from Emily Carr University, Vancouver with a specialization in media art, and an MFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His work has garnered international acclaim, with notable inclusions in Viva Arte Viva, 57th Venice Biennale 2017; Incerteza viva, 32nd São Paulo Biennale, 2016; Burning Down the House, 10th Gwangju Biennale, 2014 and in 2016, he was a resident artist at DAAD in Berlin. He also has strong ties to Canada, where his work was featured on the cover of FUSE Magazine in 2013, and in 2018-19 Figueroa presents three major solo exhibitions in Canada, at Grunt Gallery, Vancouver; the Audain Gallery, Vancouver; and Plug In ICA, Winnipeg.
