Artist Talk with Krisjanis Kaktins-Gorsline

February 25, 2016 – 7pm to 9pm

Plug In ICA is extremely pleased to present this talk by Krisjanis Kaktins-Gorsline, an artist whose research and process is deeply entangled in painting’s long history and the ephemeral, scattered and accumulative distribution of images in the digital age. Kaktins-Gorsline is known for his experimental and enigmatic abstract paintings and installations that recursively disperse and circulate images into applied layers of colour and texture. He builds complex work that is both dense in material and reference.

Kaktins-Gorsline’s talk is in conjunction with his current exhibition L’homelette, which is presented in two parts: as a site-specific work throughout The Centennial Concert Hall, Winnipeg and as a video at Plug In ICA on our monitor wall. Through the toggling of gesture and industrial process, printing and painting, L’homelette takes up Kaktins-Gorsline’s long-standing interest in repetition and difference.

Krisjanis Kaktins-Gorsline is a Winnipeg-based artist who employs a generative system of stencils and scripted mark-making procedures to create a visual grammar. He received a BFA from the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg and an MFA from Columbia University, New York. He recent exhibited Fruit on Black, Actual Gallery, Winnipeg, Mangle & Plexus, Katharine Mulherin, Toronto, Nervous Lattice, Battat Contemporary, Montréal, Here We Aren’t So Quickly, Thierry Goldberg, New York. He is represented by Lisa Kehler Art + Projects in Winnipeg and Katharine Mulherin in Toronto.

Plug In ICA gratefully acknowledges the support of the Canada Council for the Arts, the Manitoba Arts Council and Winnipeg Arts Council. We thank the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts for their support of our 2016 and 2017 program, and we extend our gratitude to The Winnipeg Foundation and all our generous donors, valued members and dedicated volunteers.
