Sound Performance by Aston Coles and Irene Bindi
January 24, 2016 – 4pm to 6pm
Plug In ICA, in partnership with the Winnipeg New Music Festival, is pleased to present an audio performance by Aston Coles and Irene Bindi in conjunction with their sound and video installation, Moon Rehearsal Tape. Winnipeg-based Coles and Bindi are recognized for their collaborative practice that spans visual art, experimental cinema, and noise music, unsettling ideas of performance and presentation.
A mutable, multi-object sound system built by Coles is the centre point of the performance. Acting as both sculpture and functional object, the system’s use and associations shift as it is used.
Bindi and Coles’ performance is part of a series of programs related to Plug In ICA’s current exhibition Moon Rehearsal Tape, which we hope will constitute a broad-ranging, multidisciplinary investigation of audio space and the expansive landscape of contemporary cinema. Here the gallery becomes a site in which practices and materials are worked through, analyzed, examined, displaced, transcribed, reformed, remediated, and reedited.
Irene Bindi lives in Winnipeg. Her collage, film, and sound works have appeared at venues across Canada and abroad. She is interested in the conceptual and material possibilities of alternative cinematic modes. Since 2008 she has also collaborated on sound projects with Aston Coles.
Aston Coles is an interdisciplinary artist in Winnipeg. His practice uses installation, sound and sculpture. His work isn’t about anything specifically. He works alone and collaboratively with Irene Bindi and performs solo noise as Single White Female.
Plug In ICA gratefully acknowledges the support of the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, the Canada Council for the Arts, the Manitoba Arts Council and Winnipeg Arts Council as well as our generous donors, valued members and dedicated volunteers. A special thanks to the Winnipeg New Music Festival – a valued partner.
