Plug In ICA presents an artist’s talk by Kevin Ei-ichi deForest to coincide with the exhibition Sound & Vision: Crossroads.

Kevin Ei-ichi deForest was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. His painting and installation practice is concerned with the representation of hybrid cultural identity. He earned both his B.E.S. (1983) and B.F.A. (1986) at the University of Manitoba, and his M.F.A. from Concordia University in Montreal in 1994. He also studied abroad in Holland at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten (1989-91) and was a Monbusho scholar at Seika University in Kyoto (1997-98).

DeForest’s solo exhibitions include Chez le disquaire, La Maison des Artistes Visuels Francophones, Inc., Winnipeg, Manitoba and Glendon Gallery, York University, Toronto (2010); Fake ID, Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba, Brandon, Manitoba (2006); Works from Japan and Canada, Gallery 101, Ottawa (2002); An Architecture of Hybridity, Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center, Buffalo (2002); and Make Me: Work from Japan, Mercer Union, Toronto (2000). Group exhibitions include Fax, Drawing Centre, New York (2010); Rock Stars and Wannabes, Urban Shaman Gallery, Winnipeg, Manitoba (2007); Nederland 1, The Gouda Museum, Gouda, The Netherlands (2006); Living for the City, Jack Shainman Gallery, New York (2005); AuralCultures, The Banff Centre, Banff, Color Theory, Vitamin Art Contemporanea,Turin, Italy (2004); and Americas Remixed, Fabbrica del Vapore, Milan (2002).

He is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Visual and Aboriginal Art at Brandon University in Manitoba.
