Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art is pleased to present Erika Vogt’s Darker Imposter from February 16th to the 21st as well as an artist talk on February 18th. The Los Angeles based artist is a noted for her intimate works that bring film and sculpture together. She uses materials collected from her everyday life to construct abstract scenes that form intangible stories. She has exhibited around the world and we are pleased to present her work for the first time in Winnipeg.
Darker Imposter is an erratic sequence of flashing colours, shapes and objects creating a highly dynamic montage. The structure of this video is a layering of real and hand-made images with a collection of objects and forms that Erika Vogt accumulated over time. The pacing and vivid cuts between near abstract imagery create a sense of anticipation to the edge of foreboding further aided by its fractured and static soundtrack. Playing up to the video’s title is a sense that something is awry, not what it seems. Vogt articulates drama as a formal aesthetic device. The relationship she makes between frames has no clear determination, but is binding in its sequential repetition.
Erika Vogt is an American artist based in Los Angeles. Building on her background in experimental filmmaking, Vogt’s visually dense videos combine both still and moving images, digital and analog technologies, and playfully incorporate drawings and objects from her previous projects. Frieze Film, London commissioned Vogt in 2013, resulting in Darker Imposter. Vogt has exhibited internationally at venues including the Overduin and Kite, Los Angeles; the Simone Subal Gallery and the Whitney Biennial, New York; Foam and the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Henry Art Gallery, Seattle; the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (Biennial); Kuenstlerhaus Stuttgart, and at the Galerie Meerrettich, Berlin.
Darker Imposter is one of ten art videos and short films presented as part of Further Than I Can Throw A Stone. Over the duration of the exhibition, a selection of works by a diverse and international group of artist are presented sequentially as stand alone artworks, each projected for one week at a time. They are joined through medium and an interplay of performance and biography.
