Harrell Fletcher

February 13, 2009 to March 7, 2009

Opening reception: February 12, 2009 – 8:00pm

Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art presents the next iteration of its diminutive Overlooked exhibition space-a cabinet in the foyer of 286 McDermot Avenue. Featured artist Harrell Fletcher has worked collaboratively and individually on a variety of socially engaged, interdisciplinary projects for over fifteen years. For Plug In ICA’s Overlooked Space, the following instructions were selected from a running list of unrealized conceptual artworks on Fletcher’s website, www.harrellfletcher.com:

Paint a wall in a gallery a certain color and then sell the rest of the paint from the can used to paint the wall with. Maybe I would go and paint a wall in the collector’s house with the paint.”

Fletcher’s artwork will subsequently become part of Plug In ICA’s annual fundraising exhibition, Dream House 2009, and will be auctioned to the highest bidder on March 7 at 8 pm. Proceeds from all Dream House 2009 sales will go to support Plug In ICA’s diverse and internationally renowned programs, and participating artists. For more information please visit our Web Shop.

Harrell Fletcher currently teaches Social Practice at Portland State University. His work has been shown at SF MoMA, Yerba Buena Center For The Arts, The Drawing Center, The Wrong Gallery, The Seattle Art Museum, White Columns, and The Royal College of Art.  In 2004, he participated in the Whitney Biennial. In 2002 Fletcher started Learning To Love You More, an ongoing participatory website with Miranda July, published in book form in 2007 by Prestel. Fletcher has work in the collections of MoMA, The Whitney Museum, The New Museum, SF MoMA, The Berkeley Art Museum, The De Young Museum, and The Brittany FRAC. Fletcher exhibits in San Francisco and Los Angeles with Jack Hanley Gallery, in NYC with Christine Burgin Gallery, in London with Laura Bartlett Gallery, and in Paris with Gallery In Situ.

The Overlooked Space is a display vitrine in the front entrance of Plug In ICA that has been overlooked throughout Plug In’s 12 year occupancy of 286 McDermot. In an effort to participate in discourses surrounding alternative exhibition spaces and models, Plug In has invited guest curator Paul Butler to program this diminutive space.

For Dream House 2009, artists from across Canada have contributed artworks reimagining our domestic surroundings. Artwork will be available for bidding or for sale, online and at 286 McDermot Ave., throughout the course of the exhibition. Online bidding will close at noon CST March 7. The highest online bid for each artwork will open bidding at the Dream House 2009 Auction on Saturday, March 7 at 8 pm.
