8 Channel Live Recording with Children | presented as part of Aston Coles and Irene Bindi’s exhibition Moon Rehearsal Tape

Moon Rehearsal Tape by Aston Coles and Irene Bindi is conceived as a space to be defined through a series of occurrences and transformations. As one such occurrence, Coles and Bindi have organized an event, inviting eight children between the ages of two and four to explore sound and its kinetic effects through a collective recording. The children will be given microphones and effects pedals, and are invited to experiment with the possibilities of these instruments. The resulting performance will be amplified through Coles’ hand-built sound system, the central tool of the exhibition and its related programs.
Rather than receiving instruction, the children will be given a demonstration of the operation of two basic elements (microphone and pedal). From there, they will be left to shape the work. The resulting recording will be submitted to the WFMU Free Music Archive http://freemusicarchive.org/.
This live recording and resulting performance is part of a series of programs related to Moon Rehearsal Tape, which constitutes a broad-ranging, multidisciplinary investigation of audio space. Here the gallery becomes a site in which practices and materials are worked through, analyzed, examined, displaced, transcribed, reformed, remediated, and reedited.
Irene Bindi lives in Winnipeg. Her collage, film, and sound works have appeared at venues across Canada and abroad. She is interested in the conceptual and material possibilities of alternative cinematic modes. Since 2008 she has also collaborated on sound projects with Aston Coles.
Aston Coles is an interdisciplinary artist in Winnipeg. His practice uses installation, sound and sculpture. His work isn’t about anything specifically. He works alone and collaboratively with Irene Bindi and performs solo noise as Single White Female.
