Artist Talk by Kelly Lycan
December 3, 2015 – 7pm to 8:30pm
Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art is excited to present a talk with visiting artist Kelly Lycan.
In her installation and photo-based works, Lycan investigates the value and power of display, how decisions made in the presentation of objects and images become intrinsic to their meaning. Her installations bring to the forefront the role of institutions in the interpretation of artworks and the production of cultural histories.
Underglow (2014), Lycan’s widely acclaimed installation highlights the artist’s interest in optical experience and representation. Using the notion of “historical underglow” as a jumping off point, Lycan created a full-scale replica of 291, the iconic New York gallery opened by Alfred Stieglitz in 1905. She used an iconic installation photograph of 291 Gallery as the basis of the replica, recreating a spatial embodiment of the photograph.
Kelly Lycan is an installation and photo based artist who resides in Vancouver, Canada. Her primary investigation is the way objects and images are placed and displayed in the world and the cycle of value and exchange they go through. Her work has been exhibited in Canada, the US and Europe with an upcoming solo exhibition at Susan Hobbs Gallery, Toronto, 2015. Recent solo exhibitions include Presentation House Gallery, Vancouver, 2014; SFU Gallery, Burnaby, 2014; Or Gallery, Vancouver, 2011 and Gallery TPW, Toronto, 2009. She is also a member of Instant Coffee, a service-oriented artist collective who have exhibited widely, key projects presented by The America’s Society, New York; Vancouver Art Gallery; Incheon Art Platform, South Korea; Yerba Buena Center, San Francisco; Art Gallery of Ontario, Western Front, Vancouver.
