Information Session for artists in Winnipeg on The ARTIST RESALE RIGHT
April 10, 2011 – 2pm to 3pm
The Artist Resale Right (droite de suite) entitles visual artists to a percentage royalty each time their work is resold publicly by a commercial gallery, auction house, agent, or dealer. It is vitally important that all visual artists know what this right is and how it will affect them!
An information session, led by CARFAC National Executive Director, April Britski will be held on Sunday, April 10th at 2:00 pm at Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art, Unit 1 – 460 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba – parking is available on-site.
The Artist Resale Right Information Session will discuss:
– how and why to bring this law to Canada
– how it works in other countries now
– how it would work here
– the impact on Canadian visual artists and the art market
For more information, please contact CARFAC toll-free at 1-866-344-6161, or email: director@carfac.ca
Pre-registration is not required, but encouraged. Please note, registration is through CARFAC, not Plug In ICA.
Many people profit when an artwork is resold in Canada, but not the artist. The Artist’s Resale Right would allow visual artists to share in these profits just as they do in 59 other countries around the world, including the entire European Union and Australia. It is common for visual art to appreciate in value over time, as the reputation of the artist grows. An Artist’s Resale Right in Canada would entitle artists to receive 5% from the resale of their work. Canada’s Aboriginal and senior artists in particular are losing out on the tremendous profits being made on their work in the secondary market.
