Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art is pleased to present “Residues of the Recent Past,” a respondent talk by the cultural theorist Andrew Burke. This presentation is part of a series of talks, performances, workshops and readings related to Yesterday Was Once Tomorrow (or, A Brick is a Tool), an exhibition of Canadian art magazines from the 1990s curated by Kegan McFadden.

Through its assemblage of experimental and ephemeral material, Yesterday Was Once Tomorrow reveals both the proximity and distance of the recent past. Burke’s talk will focus on the ways the past persists inside the present. It will connect Plug In ICA’s current exhibition to other contemporary cultural practices and critical interventions that likewise register what has been lost with the passage of time, but nevertheless preserve for the present the disposition and desires of an earlier historical moment.

Andrew Burke is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at the University of Winnipeg, where he teaches screen studies and critical theory. He has recently published articles on a variety of subjects ranging from the films of the pop group Saint Etienne, the cultural history of the Moog synthesizer, and the installations of Douglas Coupland. He is at work on a book project tentatively titled The Past Inside the Present: Cultural Memory and Canadian Film and Television.
