SOUND • PERFORMANCES • ART

We celebrated the participants of Session I of our 2019 Summer Institute: Trackings and Trappings with an open studio and roof top party. Plug In ICA hosted a night of art, sound, and performances by Toby Gillies, Serena Lee, benni macdonald, Marijana Mandusic, Megan Moore, Tracy Peters, Davis Plett, Lucas Regazzi, Sabrina Sethi, Nicole Shimonek, Suzie Smith, and Mahri White.

Trackings and Trappings was led by faculty members: Natalie Purschwitz, Anju Singh, and Justine A. Chambers. The program was marked by two intensive weeks that included presentations, public lectures and conversations, performances, outings, movement and somatic exercises, workshops, and studio visits by the respective faculty and by guest speaker Bopha Chhay.

From July 8-19th, participants considered the expanded notions of mapping, encouraging participants to investigate their own practice through the trappings of normalized systems of belief. Participants were invited to reorient their gaze, sensation, and attention to gain understanding of how hard-wired ideological structures influence how we chart our trajectories through lived experience and conditioned environments.

The rooftop patio included food + drink, and featured a playlist put together by Justine A. Chambers’ grandmother, titled Tailfeather.

All programming is free and open to the public!

Acknowledgments

Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art recognizes we are in the territories of the Anishinaabeg, Cree, Dakota, Dene, Métis, and Oji-Cree Nations. Plug In ICA is situated in Treaty 1 territory, the ancestral and traditional homeland of Anishinaabe peoples. Treaty 1 was signed in 1871, taking this territory from seven local Anishinaabe First Nations in order to make the land available for settler use and ownership (Referenced from the University of Winnipeg).

Our Summer Institute is generously sponsored by the RBC Foundation who has made a generous commitment to fund multiple years of the program. We are also extremely thankful to the Johnston Group for subsidizing the tuition of all of the participants accepted. Plug In ICA extends our heartfelt gratitude to our generous donors, valued members, and dedicated volunteers. We acknowledge the sustaining support of our Director’s Circle. You all make a difference.

We gratefully acknowledge the support of the Canada Council, the Manitoba Arts Council and the Winnipeg Arts Council. We could not operate without their continued financial investment and lobbying efforts. Plug In ICA relies on community support to remain free and accessible to all. This support enables us to continue to present excellent programs.
