Workshop with Eduardo Aquino

July 8, 2015 – 10am to 12pm

IS THIS RELATED? WELL IT’S NOT UNRELATED. WHAT WOULD YOU TITLE THIS?

I really had no program or any established plan. I didn’t even ask myself if I should sell my paintings or not. —Marcel Duchamp

On April 14th, 1919 the sister of Marcel Duchamp, Suzanne, married one of his closest friends, the painter Jean Crotti. Marcel’s wedding present to the couple arrived by mail three weeks later: a letter that contained instructions for a work of art his sister and Jean were to make. His letter said to take a geometry textbook, open it, and then bind it with wire to the metal railing of their apartment’s balcony. It was to be left out in the weather until it learned the facts of life. Duchamp was in Buenos Aires when his sister was married and he wrote a letter about how any game a person felt compelled to play was also a game whose rules anyone could change. It is known that the letter was based on frequent conversations he had with Jorge Luis Borges at Café Tortoni, another avid game player and inventor. The Summer Institute is a space where artists are invited to create their own games. Which game are you playing? This workshop will ask the instructions of your game, and will provide instructions of a few more.
